4:35 pm - Name change
Yay! I finally got around to changing my username.

When I joined LJ, I wasn't quite sure how much of myself I was going to be, if that makes sense. So I created a relatively neutral name that didn't reveal much other than that I love lynxpoint Siamese cats. But as I've spent more time here, I've posted with relative candor. And besides, my old username sounds kind of silly and juvenile. So now I've got a name that's much more me.

(Though my name isn't actually Molly, it should be noted. The name is a reference to a Richard Thompson song, "1952 Vincent Black Lightning," and the number is my lucky number. But I do have red hair.)

3:33 pm - Which Lolcat Are You?

Your Score: Longcat

51% Affectionate, 42% Excitable, 44% Hungry

Protector of truth.

Slayer of darkness.

Loooooong.

Longcat may seem like just a regular lengthy cat, but he is, in fact, looong. For proof, observe the longpic.

It is prophesized that Longcat and his archnemesis Tacgnol will battle for supremacy on Caturday. The outcome will change the face of the world, and indeed the very fabric of lolcatdom, forever.

Be grateful that the test has chosen you, and only you, to have this title.

4:34 pm - Forty percent dog, sixty percent cat
That's a little more dog than I would have expected...

You Are: 40% Dog, 60% Cat

You and cats have a lot in common.
You're both smart and in charge - with a good amount of attitude.
However, you do have a very playful side that occasionally comes out!

11:35 am - Ravelry
So I finally got a Ravelry invitation, and I have to say, I think it's about the best thing ever. Maybe it's because it appeals to my librarian/IA "organize everything" self, but I just love the idea of being able to keep track of my own projects and see what other people are working on all in one place, without having to trawl through the massive LJ knitting community archives or rely on Google. The site also has an aesthetically pleasing design and is very easy to use, which helps. Plus maybe it will get me to finally start photographing my FOs. (My username there is redmolly.)

My only concern about it is that it's a time hog (which is my fault, not the site's!). I could spend hours playing around there if I'm not careful.

4:12 pm - My new favorite quiz
This one cracks me up.

http://quizilla.com/users/deadword/quizzes/What%20obsolete%20skill%20are%20you?

(I especially love the fact that one of the obscure skills is "French." Heh.)

Songs of Innocence, Introduction

You are 'regularly metric verse'. This can take many forms, including heroic couplets, blank verse, and other iambic pentameters, for example. It has not been used much since the nineteenth century; modern poets tend to prefer rhyme without meter, or even poetry with neither rhyme nor meter.

You appreciate the beautiful things in life--the joy of music, the color of leaves falling, the rhythm of a heartbeat. You see life itself as a series of little poems. The result (or is it the cause?) is that you are pensive and often melancholy. You enjoy the company of other
people, but they find you unexcitable and depressing. Your problem is that regularly metric verse has been obsolete for a long time.

What obsolete skill are you?
brought to you by Quizilla

The above was my result the second time I took the quiz; the first time, I got this, which is probably a little more accurate:

You are 'programming in QBASIC'. This programming language (of which the acronym stands for 'Quick Beginners' All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code'), which is so primitive that it cannot easily be used for any purpose involving the Internet nor even sound, was current more than a decade ago. You are independent, in a good way. When something which you need cannot be found, you make it yourself. In writing and in talking with people, you value clarity and precision; your friends may not realize how important that is. When necessary, you are prepared to be a mediator in conflicts between your friends. You are very rational, and you think of things in terms of logic and common sense. Unfortunately, your emotionally unstable friends may be put off by your devotion to logic; they may even accuse you of pedantry and insensitivity. Your problem is that programming in QBASIC has been obsolete for a long time.

2:26 pm - Where in the world?
This is kind of cool but also a little depressing: on a global scale, I really haven't been anywhere.

6:50 pm - What city do you belong in?
Okay, so I might have tailored my answers just a little to make sure I got the right result, but only a very little. (Besides, then I took it again and answered completely honestly, and the results were the same. It's destiny.)

You Belong in London

A little old fashioned, and a little modern.

A little traditional, and a little bit punk rock.

A unique woman like you needs a city that offers everything.

No wonder you and London will get along so well.

5:22 pm - Not acting my age
You Are 27 Years Old

Under 12: You are a kid at heart. You still have an optimistic life view - and you look at the world with awe.

13-19: You are a teenager at heart. You question authority and are still trying to find your place in this world.

20-29: You are a twentysomething at heart. You feel excited about what's to come... love, work, and new experiences.

30-39: You are a thirtysomething at heart. You've had a taste of success and true love, but you want more!

40+: You are a mature adult. You've been through most of the ups and downs of life already. Now you get to sit back and relax.

3:01 pm - I am a nerd. Duh.
I absolutely love this.

Tri-Lamb Material
95 % Nerd, 47% Geek, 60% Dork
For The Record:

A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia.
A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one.
A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions.
You scored better than half in Nerd and Dork, earning you the coveted title of: Tri-Lamb Material.

The classic, "80's" nerd, you are what most people think of when they think "nerd," largely due to 80's movies like Revenge of the Nerds and TV shows like Head of the Class. You're exceptionally bright and smart, and partly because of that have never quite fit in with your peers or social groups. Perhaps you're realized, or will someday, that it is possible to retain all of the things that you like about being brilliant and still make peace with the social cliques around you. Or maybe you won't--it's really not necessary. As the brothers of Lambda Lambda Lambda discovered, you're fine just the way you are and can take pride in that. I mean, who wants to be like Ogre, right!?

11:42 am - What Gender is Your Brain
I so can't resist stuff like this--especially when it's reasonably accurate, as this one is:

Your Brain is 60.00% Female, 40.00% Male

Your brain is a healthy mix of male and female

You are both sensitive and savvy

Rational and reasonable, you tend to keep level headed

But you also tend to wear your heart on your sleeve

10:20 pm - Now that I'm in a knitalong,
my first knitalong, in fact, I'm going to have to post over here more often in case people are looking me up from the knitalong page.

I'll be adding the button after I play with the look of my blog page a little bit, just so's I can feel official. I didn't think I'd be ready for a knitalong so relatively soon in My Life as a Knitter (MLAAK), but I love the Irish Hiking Scarf pattern, and I just finished a scarf and am close to finishing the Princess Snowball cat bed, so I'm ready for a new challenge. Especially one that doesn't look like it will be too challenging--just challenging enough, I think.

Need to order the yarn for it tomorrow, or just settle for one of the nicer varieties of Lion Brand at Hobby Lobby. I'm still tempted by either Cashmerino or Cascade 220 Tweed...

9:18 pm - It's my birthday...
...and somewhat unusually for a birthday, I'm absurdly, unaccountably happy. It wasn't even a bad day at work.

Some days you just have to be glad for the good days. (And that's about as profound as I'm going to get.)

5:07 pm - Two entries in one day...
...it's either a sign of my desperate boredom, or a sign that I might actually try to keep this blog updated.
Or both.

I've gotten nothing done at work today, but I often work best after 5PM, when most people are gone. So I put on my new Mic Harrison CD to help me focus so I could crank out some work before I leave, and it's so good that I had to stop to post about how good it is. Mic was in the V-Roys, one of the great unsung bands of all time. This new CD has been in the works for a while, and it's worth the wait, at least three songs into it. Great melodic, slightly twangy, straightforward rock. I'm going to put in a little plug for him--you can buy the CD or learn more about Mic here. And you should.

3:44 pm - Finally...
I finished my first knitting project this weekend. It's a little knit bag from a kit that I got at Barnes & Noble (with a giftcard) last December. I thought it would be everything I needed to get me started as a knitter, but the basic knitting instructions were so vague and badly written that I had to learn from books (Sally Melville's first Knitting Experience book and, of course, Debbie Stoller's Stitch & Bitch book). The instructions for the bag were fine, though, until I got to the instructions for finishing, which were ridiculously vague. In the end, it came out looking pretty nice, but it's smaller than it was supposed to be (since it was just a practice project really, I didn't bother with gauge), so I won't have much use for it. It's hanging on my bedroom doorknob at the moment, and it will either be a kitty toy soon or else I'll save it for the rare occasions when I go out and need only my keys and driver's license.

Still, it's a finished project. YAY!

The first time I tried to start it, I couldn't follow the basics, as I said, so I gave up and tried something much simpler: a knit-only scarf from the Sally Melville book. Her instructions were to use something sumptuous for the yarn, so I bought a couple of skeins of incredibly beautiful Trendsetter Vintage yarn in a variety of reds and purples. Unfortunately, Vintage is an eyelash-y sort of yarn that was very difficult for an absolute beginner to work with--it kept snagging and slipping and just generally messing up, plus when I first started knitting, I had that bad habit of adding stitches accidentally. I think I originally cast on 27 and ended up with 32. Plus when I tried to unravel it and start over, it snagged and bunched and broke, and now I have a bagful of bits and pieces of it, along with a completely misshapen two-thirds of a scarf. Heh. I figure it's all part of the learning process. Eventually I'll figure out what to do with the leftover usable bits. For now, I got some even nicer unnatural-fiber yarn (I can't have wool anywhere near my skin, so it's cottons and synthetics for me) to make the same scarf from, and I got some completely heavenly dark green yarn to make the same scarf for my husband. (Can't remember the brand, but it's called "Touch Me," which is definitely an appropriate name.) And then onto the fuzzy pink cat bed from Stitch and Bitch for my littlest cat, who loves cat beds. After that, I've got some gorgeous cotton yarn in a blend of soft colors (inherited from my mom, may she rest in peace--she was an incredible knitter, and she'd be happy to see me knitting) that I'm going to use to make a little hat for a friend's new baby boy. And then...

And then school will start again and I'll be too busy to knit much. But the obsession will continue, I'm guessing.

4:48 pm - Maybe I'm not cut out to be a blogger...
...since I'm not being any more diligent about updating this one than I am my other one.

So it's almost June, and I've got a 25-page paper left over from last summer that I need to finish this month or else, and I also need to be working on a proposal for an independent study project and other school/new-career-related stuff, and all I can think about is knitting. I wonder if all beginning knitters go through an obsessive phase like this. Other than hanging out with my husband and the 3 Siamese mixes that are responsible for my blog name, it's my only reliable source of pleasure these days. I'm traveling tomorrow, and I've actually put off doing any knitting for a few days just so I can finish my current project on the plane. It's weird. I'm the least craftsy person that ever lived, but knitting just hits the spot for me.

4:51 pm - This is going to ruin my life...
I'm gearing up for the last week of the semester and have a book review, a revision of a final paper, a presentation, and a final report to write by next Wednesday. Seems like the perfect time to start a new blog...

Eventually I will migrate my Blogger journal entries over here, I think...but I kind of want this to be a blog about everything, especially non-music-related stuff, so maybe I'll just keep the music one on Blogger after all. That will let me spend even more time writing about things other than the stuff I'm supposed to be writing about.
